Some days you don’t want to pull out the computer in order to give your students practice STAAR time. When those days arise, the STAAR lapbook foldable is the perfect solution. Using all of the online capabilities possible, we have created a physical paper foldable to replicate all options students experience.
Each STAAR lapbook foldable, contains one TEKS-based passage which can be scrolled through slits in a manila folder, four reading comprehension questions that toggle by question number through folding, two short answer response questions (SCR) with lines on which to write their answers, and one ECR prompt with a full page on which to respond and 4 editing/revising questions!
This is the ultimate way to make practicing for the online STAAR test completely kinesthetic. After completing a lapbook, students have a much better understanding of what the assessment will look like when connecting it to what they will see on the computer.
The lapbooks also make for a great small group activity, station activity, or a take-home activity to complete with their families.
Never underestimate the power of cutting, folding, stapling, taping, and physically assembling something in a student’s mind. It is often through the lapbooks that students make connections in a physical way which later apply to an online platform.
